About

Mario Botta

A native of Mendrisio, Ticino, he was born on April 1st, 1943. After serving an apprenticeship in Lugano for some time, he went on to complete his secondary education at an artistic high school in Milan and then continued his education at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice.

He earned his degree there in 1969 under the tutelage of Carlo Scarpa and Giuseppe Mazzariol. During the time that he spends in Venice, he had the opportunity to meet Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn, as well as work for both of them.

In 1970, he established his own firm in Lugano, and ever since then, he has been engaged in an extensive teaching activity. He has hosted conferences, seminars, and classes at architecture schools in Europe, Asia, the United States of America, and Latin America.

In 1976, he was given the position of visiting professor at the Polytechnic University of Lausanne, and in 1987, he was given the same position at the Yale School of Architecture in New Haven, Connecticut, United States of America.

Since 1983, he has held the position of professor at the Swiss Polytechnic Schools. Prior to that, he served as a member of the Swiss Federal Commission of Fine Arts from 1982 until 1987.

His work has encompassed all types of architectural typologies, beginning with single-family homes in Canton Ticino and expanding to include schools, banks, administrative buildings, libraries, museums, and sacred buildings.

He has been actively involved in the creation and founding of the new Mendrisio Academy of Architecture during the past few years, and he continues to teach there.

His work has been recognized on a global scale with a number of prestigious awards, and there have been a great deal of exhibitions devoted to his research.
