Franz Romero was influenced by the Bugatti Type 57, a classic example of Art Deco design, to create the DS-57 armchair for de Sede.
The designer has not only achieved a visual perfect embodiment of the car in armchair form, but he has also managed to include the characteristic seating comfort of Bugatti car seats.
The chair's design mimics the sleek lines of a classic car, and it's intended to be sat in with the same low height as in a sports car. The chair's back cushions are also angled backwards to further emphasize the ergonomic benefits of this position.
The armrests, which are huge and reach all the way to the floor, are shaped like the fenders of the real Bugatti 57, and they point downwards for authenticity.
