FK Bucket Chair

Carpenter-turned-interior-design student Preben Fabricius (1931-1984) met blacksmith Jrgen Kastholm while studying under Finn Juhl in Copenhagen (1931-2007). Fabricius and Kastholm established a design studio together in 1961; it produced several influential pieces of furniture.

It was their goal to design furniture that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. That was their ultimate goal: to stop the passage of time.

Danish interior designers followed the functional-aesthetic tradition of Scandinavian design by prioritizing the optimization of form, material, and ergonomics. Similarly, the Bauhaus influenced their method.

It was in the late 1960s when Fabricius and Kastholm created the FK, which has since become an iconic piece of design. The bucket seat is a symbol of timeless style that is also a leading example of contemporary minimalism. The chair was the very first object to be awarded Germany's Federal Prize for "Good Form" in 1969.

The FK continues to be recognized as one of Walter Knoll's most recognizable pieces of furniture.
